According to PSO officials, additional supply comprising 250,000 tonnes of furnace oil daily to KESC was stated to begin on Wednesday but supply was not being restored owing to dissent from the Company regarding complete payment of furnace oil to PSO. According to sources, PSO was to supply the KESC with furnace oil at gas price; while, price difference was to be paid by Finance Ministry.

It may be mentioned here that Ministry asked PSO to provide the Company with 250,000 tonnes of furnace oil daily at gas price in a bid to overcome power crisis in the metropolis.

Due to closure of Zamzama Gas Field, Sui Southern Gas Company had curtailed provision of gas to KESC, heightening the power shortfall in Karachi. The decision led to long hours power outages in industrial and commercial areas here.

On the other hand, sources claimed that Electricity price would be Rs 18.96 per unit till the next budget. The government had increased electricity price by 29 percent during last year while it will further be increased by 17 percent till next budget. And the overall increase from October 1, 2009 to next budget would be 46.6 percent. It was included in the terms set by IMF and World Bank loan agreements.

Meanwhile, PARCO and other gas companies of the country raised the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) by Rs9,600 per ton on Wednesday. According to CNG Distribution Association of Pakistan, the price of locally produced LPG has been increased from Rs78,800 to Rs89,425 per ton. After this latest increase of Rs9.60 on every kilogram, the retail price of LPG has climbed to Rs95 per kg. The price of each LPG cylinder, weighing 11.80 kg, has jumped to Rs1,035 after an increase of Rs113 while the cost of a 45.4 kg LPG cylinder has mounted to Rs3,976 after an increase of Rs436 per cylinder.
